Actions,
so far
Improving the communication among scientists on the on hand and between
science and society on the other hand is crucial, more particularly in
the area of "nanotechnology". Several actions have been undertaken
so far. At the EuroNanoForum held in December 2003 in Trieste a high-level
session was dedicated to societal aspects (-1-). In
January 2002, a workshop was held jointly with the U.S. National Science
Foundation on "where we are" in understanding the societal implications
of nanotechnology (-2-). On 11 June 2003, my services
participated in a hearing on nanotechnology organised by the European
Parliament to discuss public concerns and the need for information. (-3,4-)
From this we have learned that we should pay the utmost attention to the
societal and ethical implications of nanotechnologies, even if no real
risk has been identified so far.
This is why
I am looking forward with interest to the outcome of the debate you have
launched.
